The fans of Nantes will never forget

Emiliano Sala.

Conquered by their goals, the tragedy that ended the Argentine striker's life saddened a club that idolized him. Confirmed the painful outcome, his former teammates, the fans and the club gave him a last tribute this Sunday to dismiss an immortal room in the memory of those who celebrated with him each of his conquests.

The match against Nimes for the 23rd date of France's Ligue 1 was moving from its prologue. Outside the stadium, fans mounted a sanctuary in his honor. Absolutely silent, thousands passed by to pay homage to Sala.

Inside the court, his former teammates hung his shirt from the net of one of the arches. His yellow coat, with the nine stamp, will be withdrawn by the club in tribute to the Argentine. It was not the only pledge in his honor: there was also a leader of Cardiff, the club that had hired him.

Minutes before the match began, the fans received the team with a formidable mural built by cards that formed a nine, the number that Sala used throughout his journey in the French team. The preview was accompanied by a minute of applause instead of the usual minute of silence and at nine minutes the ovation intensified.

The Nantes players wore a special shirt for the occasion, a completely black kit in reference to the mourning that crosses a club hit by the unexplained death of Sala. Each of the players used their respective numbers but they carried the surname of the Argentine on the back.

The leadership, which established all prices within its stadium to nine euros as another tribute to the Argentine, fans and players gave a last goodbye to Emiliano Sala, while trying to find comfort and explanation to an absurd death.

The game itself seemed imbued with the general feeling: Nantes squandered the 2-0 lead with which he went into halftime and ended up losing 4-2. Although that, in the end, has been a detail.
