From Jong, a diamond in search of his siteSeptember 8, 2019
Frenkie De Jong's position in Barcelona is debated. Nobody disputes the quality of the Dutch midfielder, who at just 22 years old aims to be a world figure in the next decade, but in his first months of Blaugrana it is hard for him to find the place to shine.
Good proof of this is the day of selections that has been experienced this week. De Jong with Holland returned to his pivot position in the Dutch victory against Germany in Hamburg 2-4 where he led the oranje and even scored a goal. In Barca, he played in that position the first game in San Mamés and then with the return of Busquets to the title was lost as a left inside.
The problem is to combine both players, because Busquets is hardly going to have competition in that position. For Badia, the day of selections also meant a bath of self-esteem, because he played a great game as a center with Spain in the victory of La Roja in Romania. The debate on how to mix both is open.
Ronald de Boer, former Barcelona player and coach of the Ajax youth team in Amsterdam and therefore a good connoisseur of De Jong is clear and spoke with AS: “I saw the last games of Barcelona and Frenkie was playing almost in band. I don't think that's your position you have to play as a center or pivot center. I don't know what Valverde will do, what I do know is that Frenkie may have to be patient. Busquets already has an age although he continues with the same quality as always on the pitch ”.
De Jong's numbers in the Germany-Netherlands match in the pivot position were stratospheric, far removed from those he signed in his first performances with Barcelona. Before the Germans, De Jong played 95 minutes, scored a goal and starred in 81 interventions in the game, finished with a success in the pass of 93% (66 out of 71), tHe succeeded in two dribbles of the three he tried, intercepted two balls, won three of seven duels in split balls and placed seven of eight long passes successfully. An impeccable performance.
Now, it's up to adapt to the reality of Blaugrana. “The philosophy of Barcelona is not new to him. What happens is that the rest of the players have to finish understanding their game. Frenkie is a different type from Busquets. His teammates have to adapt to him and Frenkie to his teammates. What is clear is that he has a talent he had not seen in a long time. That is why I am convinced that he will end up triumphing there, ”says Frank de Boer.
