Argentina XV swept Chile and set several records in the Americas Rugby ChampionshipMarch 10, 2019
The changes that the Argentine Rugby Union (UAR) decided for its second national team this season had immediate effect: Argentina XV rallied in the Americas Rugby Championship and undefeated the title of continental champion after two successive conquests of the United States.
The strawberry of the dessert was the beating that the albiceleste set gave to Chile this Saturday in Santiago: an impressive 85-10, which included an overwhelming supremacy in the development and a festival of 13 tries albicelestes. It was the widest victory in a contest that led by Ignacio Fernández Lobbe dominated from start to finish, with wins that in no case were less than 16 points apart.
The determination to rank the team by consolidating a player base, building a collective identity and strengthening the competition through a larger calendar found results very soon: Argentina XV rounded off its best performance in the four years of the Americas Rugby Championship. In fact, it became the first set to obtain the ideal score, of 25 units (the United States had added 24 in 2018) and set the record of so many for a selected one, with 258 (it had the previous mark, of 228, indicated in 2017).
He also got several own recordings, namely:
- his 38 tries in the five dates, at a rate of 7.6 per game, beat long the previous mark, of 32, set in 2017;
- the 60 goals against, with an average of 12 per game, were two less than the 62 received also two years ago;
- the only 6 tries received (average of 1.2 per encounter), leave behind the previous minimum record of 8, which dates back to 2017.
Paradoxically, although several of these statistics correspond to the penultimate season, the champion was then the United States, like the next. Now with two conquests, Argentina XV equaled the American team in history. The devastating ride of the team captained by Lautaro Bavaro consisted of a 54-3 to Brazil in Neuquén, a 45-14 to the United States in Cipolletti, a 35-10 to Uruguay in Buenos Aires, a 39-23 to Canada in Langford and the 85-10 to Los Cóndores on the other side of the Andes mountain range.
The remaining results of the last day were Uruguay 42 vs. Brazil 20, in Montevideo (Los Tupis went ahead by 20 to 14), and United States 30 vs. Canada 25, in Seattle. Consequently, Los Teros was runner-up, a unit above the Americans.
